Summer is here and perhaps you’re looking for some good reads or listens. We love listening to podcasts and reading books right along with our clients, which tends to spark interesting conversations and support the work we do together. We sorted through and selected some (there are so many!) of our favorite books and podcasts related to nutrition, body image and/or liberation, and ditching diet culture. We’re sharing in hopes of inspiring your next reading or listening experience!

PODCASTS

Maintenance Phase: Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes pull back the curtain on various health and wellness beliefs, fads, social constructs around body image and weight. They offer research and thoughtful conversation helping listeners expand their knowledge while encouraging them to choose the path that works for them.


Food Psych: Christy Harrison explores nutrition, body image, making peace with food, healing from disordered eating through a non-diet lens.


Rethinking Wellness: Listeners are invited to explore wellness and diet culture with a critical lens and compassionate criticism, and reflect on how they can cultivate their own sense of well-being.


Eat the Rules: Summer Innanen discusses body image, the anti-diet movement, feminism, and self-help by sharing some of her practical tips and advice. She also interviews leading experts dedicated to spreading the work on these topics and more.


Burnt Toast: Virginia Sole-Smith takes a look at anti-fat bias, dismantling diet culture, and includes consideration for how parents can support their children’s autonomy and confidence in a body/weight and diet focused society.


What the Actual Fork?: Hosted by Sammy and Jenna, both registered dietitians and moms, this podcast helps listeners learn about food freedom, body image, parenting, and so much more. They share facts and personal stories and experiences to educate and relate to their audience.


Beyond Body: Mia and Holly blend humor, wisdom, education, and practical tips as they guide listeners along their mental health and/or eating disorder recovery paths.


Body Kindness: Rebecca Scritchfield, dietitian and certified exercise physiologist, helps listeners explore their own definition of health and what it means to pursue it. Episodes focus on self-care, moving in a way that feels good, breaking free from food rules, and how being kind to oneself can foster a more satisfying way of life.


Female Athlete Nutrition: A sports dietitian discusses the importance of fueling properly for sports, athletics, and movement of all kinds. She explores the intersection of disordered eating and exercise and shares her knowledge of nutrition for activity, discusses how to improve body image, and supports folks in overcoming harmful nutrition practices.


Seems Like Diet Culture: Registered dietitian Mallory helps listeners sort through the complexities of health (mis)information widely available online, via social media…and everywhere! She features solo episodes full of actionable information and also interviews guests and listener question/answer shows for further education and discussion. 


The Full Plate: The focus of this pod is on healing from diet culture, creating peace with food, reclaiming body autonomy and trust, all from a weigh-inclusive lens. 


Weight For It: This narrative podcast dives deep into the ways we think about our bodies. It includes personal storytelling and in-depth interviews hosted by Ronald Youn, Jr.


Willing to Be Wrong: In medical school, Dr. Joshua Wolrich realized the extent to which the health system focuses on body weight as a measure of health, and how this is all wrong. He practices from a weight-inclusive lens and is aware that focusing on weight brings direct and indirect harm to patients. He brings in guests to help shed light on the weight-centric medical system and to discuss the complexities of weight and health.


Food Heaven: Registered dietitians Wendy and Jessica talk with health and nutrition experts about how to find balance in our lives. They steer far clear of diets and quick fixes, and focus on sustainability with intuitive eating and body acceptance - all from an inclusive point of view.


Find Your Food Voice: This podcast wants to fix diet culture and remind listeners they don’t need to “fix” anything about themselves. Registered dietitian Julie Duffy Dillon exposes diet culture and societal lies, ditches one-size-fits-all approaches to nutrition, and helps listeners rewrite their own story when it comes to food, eating, and their bodies.


Fat Joy: Sophia Apostol pushes forward a movement against anti-fatness. She speaks with fat people about their experiences in an anti-fat world. She explores the harms, biases, marginalizations, and oppressions of fat folks, as well as celebrates their courage and bravery to reach for their best lives and advocate for fat liberation.


Can I Have Another Snack?: Listen in for an exploration of appetite, identity, and bodies. Host Laura Thomas reflects on how we feed ourselves in a culture obsessed with dieting and considers what we need to survive it.
